Dodge Dodge Ram 3500 Pickup

Importing a used Dodge Ram 3500 from the USA

The Dodge Ram 3500 is a one-ton heavy-duty pickup built to tow and haul more than almost anything on European roads, and its Cummins turbodiesel gives it a cult following. Whether you need serious towing capacity for a horsebox, a fifth-wheel or heavy equipment, or you simply want a proper American work truck, importing a used Ram 3500 from the USA is the direct way to get one. USCar Trader operates as an independent broker for used vehicles: we find the truck, verify its origin and history and organise freight and customs clearance, holding no stock and adding no vehicle margin. Note that from the 2011 model year the truck was branded Ram rather than Dodge, though the Dodge Ram 3500 name remains in wide use.

Model history and generations

The relevant generations are the third (DR/DH, 2003–2009), the fourth (2010–2018, branded Ram from 2011) and the fifth (2019 onward). The third generation introduced the modern common-rail Cummins and a bolder look; the fourth generation brought coil or air rear suspension options on some trucks, big interior gains and the switch to Ram branding; the fifth generation modernised the cab, added a high-output Cummins and pushed towing figures to record levels. Across these, the 3500 is the one-ton model above the 1500 and 2500, available with single or dual rear wheels ("dually").

Engines and drivetrain

Two engine families dominate. The petrol option is the 5.7-litre (and later 6.4-litre) HEMI V8, strong and simpler to service. The heart of the range, though, is the Cummins inline-six turbodiesel: the 5.9-litre (around 325 hp and up to 610 lb-ft) through 2007, then the 6.7-litre Cummins (rising over the years to around 350–420 hp and 800–1,075 lb-ft in later high-output form). Transmissions include 6-speed manuals (earlier diesels), 6-speed automatics and, on newer trucks, heavy-duty AISIN automatics. Rear-wheel drive is standard with part-time four-wheel drive widely available, essential for a working truck.

Which trim makes sense

Body styles span regular cab, extended/Quad Cab and roomy Crew/Mega Cab, with 6.5-foot or 8-foot beds and single or dual rear wheels. Trims evolved from ST, SLT, Laramie and Big Horn to Longhorn and Limited on later trucks, ranging from vinyl-floor work spec to full leather luxury. Chassis-cab versions exist too, but the pickup is the common import.

Supply on the US market

Heavy-duty Rams are everywhere in the US, so the used pool is deep. Typical import candidates are Cummins diesels showing 90,000–200,000 miles (roughly 145,000–320,000 km) — high figures that these engines take in their stride. Trucks from ranch and towing duty in dry states are often rust-free but may show honest work wear; look for documented maintenance on the diesel and transmission. Dually trucks are more specialised; single-rear-wheel 3500s are more manageable on European roads.

Who benefits from importing

This is a truck for genuine heavy towing and hauling — horse owners, showmen, contractors, RV and trailer users — or for enthusiasts who want the Cummins experience. It is large and thirsty, so it is not a commuter, but few used imports match its capability. Buyers who value the legendary Cummins durability and a truck that can pull a serious load will find the Ram 3500 hard to beat.

Known weak points and maintenance

The Cummins is the reason people import these trucks, and its long-block reliability is excellent. Still, there are known Ram 3500 common problems to check. On the 6.7 Cummins the emissions hardware is the weak point: EGR coolers, the DPF and NOx sensors can clog or fail, especially on trucks driven short distances, so look for maintenance records and no warning lights. The 5.9 common-rail can suffer injector and lift-pump wear. On the automatics, confirm firm, clean shifts, particularly behind the diesel. The front-end track bar, ball joints and steering (the fourth-gen "death wobble" is well documented) should be inspected on 4x4 trucks. Also check the frame and body mounts on salt-belt trucks and the condition of the turbo and its actuator. A well-serviced Cummins is one of the most durable drivetrains you can import.

US and EU spec compared

These trucks were built for the US market with mph speedometers, US lighting (amber rear indicators, no rear fog lamp) and US emissions calibration. Their size and axle weights matter for German regulations, and heavier trucks may require a specific driving licence class. There is no European CoC, so an individual approval is mandatory, and the diesel emissions equipment must be assessed for German approval.

The import process in detail

The process runs in order. First, selection to your specification — generation, engine, cab, bed, drive and budget. Second, a VIN and origin check with a Carfax or AutoCheck history. Third, escrow payment so funds release only against clean documents. Fourth, inland haulage to a US port and ocean freight, RoRo or container, to Bremerhaven or Antwerp. Fifth, EU customs clearance. Sixth, TÜV inspection and individual approval (Einzelabnahme) under §21 StVZO, including diesel emissions checks. Finally, registration, with attention to weight class and licence requirements.

What customs clearance really costs

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

Two separate charges apply. Import duty is set by the truck's actual country of origin. Ram heavy-duty trucks have been assembled in both the USA and Mexico depending on year and plant, so the VIN must be checked: if it proves genuine US origin and the truck ships directly from the States between 1 July 2026 and 31 December 2029, the temporary 0% EU import duty under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 may apply; a Mexican-built or otherwise non-US truck is assessed at the standard rate. Separately, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies to the customs value in every case. USCar Trader passes both official amounts through at cost with no margin and guarantees no duty outcome before the VIN is confirmed.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Typical work includes fitting a red rear fog lamp, converting or adjusting the headlights for right-hand traffic and confirming compliant indicators. The diesel emissions system is checked against German requirements. The odometer reading in miles is documented, and because of the truck's weight, axle loads and towing ratings are reviewed and the correct vehicle and licence class established at registration.

Check before you buy

Before you commit, confirm: (1) VIN decode and US-versus-Mexico plant of origin for customs; (2) a Carfax or AutoCheck report free of salvage, flood or accident flags; (3) frame, body-mount and bed rust inspection; (4) Cummins emissions-system health — EGR, DPF and sensors with no active faults; (5) transmission and front-end steering condition (track bar, ball joints); (6) injector and lift-pump condition on diesels; (7) clean, transferable title with no lien.

Common questions

Is it a Dodge or a Ram?

Both — it was sold as the Dodge Ram 3500 through 2010 and as the Ram 3500 from 2011, but the trucks are the same lineage.

Which engine should I import?

The Cummins turbodiesel is the classic choice for towing and longevity; the HEMI petrol is simpler and cheaper to service.

How much can it tow?

Depending on generation and configuration, later gooseneck-rated trucks can tow well over 16,000 kg, though real-world use is set by German regulations.

Will it qualify for 0% import duty?

Only if the VIN proves US assembly and the truck ships directly; Mexican-built examples are charged the standard rate. The 19% import VAT always applies.

How reliable is the Cummins diesel?

The engine itself is exceptionally durable; most issues come from the emissions hardware, so records and a clean fault memory matter.

What is death wobble?

A steering oscillation on some solid-axle 4x4 trucks, usually cured by attention to the track bar and front-end components — inspect for it before buying.

Do I need a special licence?

Possibly — heavier trucks can exceed the limit for a standard car licence, so the weight class should be checked before registration.

What mileage is acceptable?

Cummins trucks with 90,000–200,000 miles are common and can still offer long service if maintained.
